American pilots as late as 1944 flew with Military maps showing vast swathes of New Guinea UNEXPLORED!
This map and the various photos from 1944 were carefully preserved in my father's The Navigation Case.
Reading the texts of early explorers, one can see that life was little changed for the people of New Guinea over the past hundreds of years. They were largely unbothered by the outside world.
